Rescue/Emergency at Sonning

Just driven over Sonning Bridge: looks like at least two rescue teams out on the bank outside the Great House/Uri Geller's place.

At first I thought it was just an excercise however as I crossed, another emergency vehicle came through with lights/sirens going.

Fingers crossed it's for something other than someone in the water: where it comes through from the French Horn side and hits the main river, there is extremely 'active' water at the moment

Not heard anything on the local news....nothing on BBC Berks as yet.

I would like to think it was the Fire Service taking the opportunity to do a bit of live training during their vast non call out time.

As the Red boards are out it's probably and sadly unlikely.

...the way the second vehicle came through that particular stretch of road with lights/sirens suggests more urgency than training....I had wondered if perhaps it was some kind of bank collapse given the position and strong conflicting currents

According to the Henley Standard web site, "Firefighters had to intercept a 40ft pleasure boat which had drifted downstream from Shiplake to the Great House in Sonning."

OOOHHH ERRR.............thats upstream, could be a bit worrying in these conditions

How on earth could it have drifted not only upstream ( with the current torrent) but also navigate so many tight bends and snagging points where it would have become snagged....?

What am I missing?

Could have been -

He could have done "an African Queen" at Sonning bridge.


For posterity's sake could we name any incident - clouting a bridge, demolishing locks and gear as doing "an African Queen". I think the boat may have changed hands so there's no disrespec' to the current owners.

Emergency at Sonning...

Possibly referring to the disgraceful state of the moorings there outside of the Geller residence which also become an eyesore with that awful security camera and mish mash of fence, buildings et al.

Those moorings used to be a useful stay-over and very tidy. Now you have to phone for the pleasure. Nonsense
