I need to strip off my teak deck (just about worn through), which is bonded to the fibreglass deck.

I don't want to put teak back on but do like the look.

Is it a crazy plan to paint the bare deck black, mask off 5mm wide strips with fine line masking tape, then paint over with a light grey anti-slip to replicate a teak deck look?

I was thinking that the grey anti slip in contrast with the black lines might give a good result but not sure if someone tried such a thing?

Sounds like a good idea, why not? Light grey deck paint, with a little honey coloured or golden paint mixed in to give a slightly warmer colour.I think it would look great!

Bit hard to get parallel lines running around your deck with the masking tape... otherwise great idea.

If you can solve that I would love to see the result!

I would guess that it will look absolutely dreadful. It will probably look awful when new unless you have employed a signwriter. It will look even worse when part-worn. A clean painted deck with non-slip finish will look fine.

Think it would tend to look OK at some distance, but would very quickly detoriorate close up. So who are you doing it for?

Edit: I did do one with glued on thin teak on a 27ft. Looked super, but was a LOT of work and I managed to find a big teak plank at knock down price that the wood yard had forgotten about. Doubt that would happen again..

Why not get that fake teak stuff?

That deck is going to look awful about 10 mins after you finish painting it.

I tried to get a sign writer i make signs for to paint the lines on my runabout , hes high end but said he didnt want to mess up my varnish if it went wrong . Not so high end i guess .
I ended up contacting a van wrapping company that took a picture of the boat and then snapped it into the computer and made me a massive sticker . They said i could varnish over it but its lastest so well i dont see the point and they have it stored on the computer so a new one can be made if i need it .

Bravo, all in the true spirit of PBO 50 yrs ago. You might also add a bow sprit & bumpkin too
