I have just been offered a new generic starter motor made by Everspark at about 1/3 of the price of the branded product for my Yanmar 4JH3-HTE 100 HP. I am thinking of having it my spares in order to get myself out of trouble if the starter motor in my rather young and well cared for Yanmar has a problem offshore. Do any forum members have views or experience of these generics?

Although Not with this firm, but when I was at a loose end I worked as a driver for a week for a firm that did Reconditioned Starter Motors and Alternators. They were "Cock-up-merchants" They even offered me a job "overhauling" the Starters and Alternators.
Paid per item "Reconditioned" I watched them do it. Quick clean, new brushes, into Paint Room, Like new.
Nowhere near the Quality which Lucas achieved with their Lucas B90 Exchange Scheme.
But Everspark may be different.
I also have a Yanmar Diesel similar to yours and would ask the price.

Kukje Machinery South Korea used to be a Yanmar licencee. Kukje later went on to build very good quality Yanmar 'clones' under their own name which in turn spawned a huge component market. Good quality rotating electrics to Japanese, German and U.S spec available from the Far East wihout resorting to dare I say it China or India.

Suspect your Everspark is one of these. I have used similar Delco clones with good results

Seems to me to be a good "get you out of trouble" option.
If you have a problem with the original starter motor you can have it properly rebuilt, whilst using the Everspark, until you have problems with it and then swap again

RTFQ-As I mentioned at the beginning, these are newly manufactured items. They are NOT reconditioned. In order to avoid irrelevant postings, as always in the forum, I should be ultra specific. Has any reader used a new generic starter motor on a marine diesel engine, preferably one made by Everspark and with what result, please?

"avoid irrelevant postings, as always in the forum"

Love your attitude. Please ignore any information I've given. Ever.

Your posting was helpful-I followed the link. I have asked a specific question. I would appreciate a specific answer-not some irrelevant nonsense about being employed to repaint reconditioned starter motors or lofty remarks about considering the price on your motor. Too many people in this forum use it to pontificate. As far as I can see, you are not one of them.

'Too many people in this forum use it to pontificate'.

If you don't like people 'pontificating' why don't you try another forum? Seems this one's not quite perfect enough for you.

I have replaced the starter motor on my Yanmar twice. First time with a Delco part, last time with a Bosch. The original Yanmar ones are 2x to 3x the price. My Yanmar dealer tells me they are no better than the Bosch one (and indeed it was he who fitted the last one).

In my case it is not a do it yourself job to replace. It requires dismantling the heat exchanger, exhaust system, alternator and an alarming number of other bits and pieces. It was a good 5 hours work for two people. If your engine room is spacious with easy access to the port lower side of the engine, then may be less bits need removing to be able to change the starter motor.

Neither the original, nor the Delco appreciated being run by the engine for 10 minutes or more when the key is blocked in the start position! Both responded by bursting into flames.

We have now removed all the excess keys from the key ring with the engine key on it so that there is less chance of accidentally leaving the key blocked in the start position and religously turn the key from the start position to the run position each time.

The first time the starter motor caught fire we thought we were just unluckl, the second time we knew there was something going on.....

Hopefully the Bosch one will last forever.....

This was very helpful thank you. It answered my question. I wish others did as much
