I am seriously thinking of replacing my Volvo Penta 2001, 9hp, with something more powerful, probably two cylinders. Does anyone have any experience of doing this, who could advise me as to practical alternatives, such as engines which might fit on the same mountings. (The boat is a Beneteau 26, 1984.) Any suggestions appreciated, and thanks. John M.

I'm sorry that you have this problem, unfortunately I cannot advise you what engine to replace the Volvo with but believe me even a a set of oars is better than anything that Volvo can produce for the marine environment. I owned a Oceanis 32 with a Volvo engine which was the main reason for getting rid of it, the boat was great but the engine was as reliable as the French economy!!

If you have to modify the boat to suit another engine look at Bukh.

Your main difficulty arises from the fact that your Volvo probably has horizontal engine beds with the gearbox providing the downward angle drive to the prop shaft. Nothing else I know fits directly. If your gearbox is OK it might be worth investigating whether Beta can supply their engine to fit the Volvo gearbox ( they say they can fit their engine to the Volvo saildrive). I suspect quite a few people would be interested in the answer.

thanks for the input. My forward engine mounts are higher than the aft ones and the whole unit, engine and gearbox, seems to be in line with the shaft directly. I was not aware that the Beta engine might be available without gear box - had thought it all came together. Will enquire. Many thanks. JM
