Hi
I need to buy new yanmar raw water pump (engine cooling) for 2gm20 engine.
new is 350 usd , and johnson is 170 usd.
I bought the johnson but it is not like the original and must have some changes done to it.

what do you think , is it a good idea to use replacement?
does jabsco have this kind of pump as well?

Thanks.

Barti - count yourself lucky - they cost about £325 in the UK, equivalent to about $650. I am considering getting one from the US for this reason.

I think I am correct in saying that different pumps are fitted according to where the engine gets its final assembly. My GM30 was bought in Holland and came with a Johnson pump. Not knowing that there was a difference, I bought a new cover plate in UK last winter and it would not fit. This turned out to be the Yanmar version. So it would appear that there is no downside to buying the Johnson instead.

I recently observed a friend exchange a Yanmar pump with a Johnson. The Johnson needed the inlet outlets adjusting to the correct orientation and did not have a bearing on the inner end of the impellor shaft. However, it fitted and works but the bearing must be on the original for a reason and time will tell.

UK Yanmar engines seem to be fitted with a Johnson F4B-903 pump, which is 'customer branded'.

This means that it is not obtainable from firms like ASAP. It is only obtainable from Yanmar dealers at a cost of £297 inc VAT. UK owners are not permitted to purchase Yanmar spares from abroad.

Similar models of Johnson F4 pumps from ASAP, but with a pedestal mount and less the pulley cost £87 plus VAT.

This explains why I shall never have another Yanmar, or indeed anything handled by Barrus

You have two choices really.

You could go to a Yanmar dealer and pay up £300.

Or you could buy a generic F4 pump and a pulley from ASAP and retire to your workshop for an interesting design and build exercise in adaptation.
