I have one of the NASA logs with the standard paddlewheel that also seems to be a magnet for marine life resulting in it typically working for around 2 -3 weeks at the start of the season if I'm lucky.

Is it possible to replace the rotating log with a ultrasound unit that has no exterior moving parts?

Many thanks.

Yes of course.
You may have to get a new system though. I've had an ultrasonic speed transducer with a Raymarine ST60 system for over ten years. It's fit and forget like the depth sounder. You'd have to ask NASA if such a transducer would work with their display.

Why not take it out and put in the blanking plug when you are not using the boat? Yes you do get some water in but provided you keep both plug and impeller seals suitably lubricated you can get them in and out quickly and easily (providede it is accessible of course).

If you antifoul it, you don't have to bother doing this.

There isn't actually a plug on the NASA type - it's a cap. Same idea though.
