With regard to cutting, I'm not sure where I got this advice but I made a wooden cutting block about six inches long with a groove the width of the wire and a saw-cut at right-angles to this about half-way along. The stay lays in the groove and the perpendicular cut guides the hacksaw blade to give a nice square cut. The problem, I gather, of cutting with a grinder is that the heat-hardening can give a lopsided end result.
