I have seen described two different fixes for a Yanmar or Volvo tacho with a dead hours LCD. Rather than do the quite complicated dismantle/modify job does anyone know if there is a standard unit that can just be put in as a replacement? My 3YM30 tacho/LCD looks just like a standard 4000 rpm VDO unit with Yanmar painted on its face.

Hour-meters are two a penny.

Tachometer is slightly more complex. Check your connection to the alternator.

Yes, but I'd rather have things as they were, but working properly again, instead of making another hole somewhere and mounting a second hour meter. The tacho works, hourmeter (like loads of these on Volvos and Yanmars) LCD display has gone.

I seem to remember being quoted about £350 for one - and that assumed that I should fit it myself. I had thought that it was still under warranty, but they told me that it wasn't - since I only really wanted it to support the ongoing warranty on the engine, I then lost interest - t gets a service every spring, so I'm not really too interested in the actual hours.

I put together a short document to add a separate hour meter. I do not know if the Thorneycroft ones are still available, but I got a simple version that just counts when power is applied. I connected it at home to a battery charger for several weeks to get the hours reading the same as what I suspected my engine had done.

The unit I used is no longer available but this one is the same.. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hourmeter...ad5fadc&pid=100005&rk=2&rkt=6&sd=110612845608 Make sure you get a proper digital one and not a mechanical counter!

MIne has worked OK for several years now.

The document is too large to attach here but PM me if you are interested and I can email a copy.

Hour meter does not need to be part of panel

Indeed. I have two resettable ones on the switch panel by the chart table: hours since tank fill, and hours on this trip. A bit OTT perhaps, but they exactly fit the hole left by the RCD that now resides in a consumer unit.

See the Downloads section on my Bavaria site for details of the module I used.
