I need to replace one of my winches. It is an old (probably early 80's) Lewmar 7 non self tailing winch. Would a modern Lewmar 7 non st fit on to the same bolts? I'd rather not have to drill new holes, fit new backing plates etc.

If you look on the Lewmar website they have fitting templates. Print it, and take it to your boat. I wouldn't trust anyone telling me to not worry. If I doesn't fit no one here is going to give you a refund.
Look hard enough and you will probably find a template for your old winch. May even save the trip to the boat.

Even if they don't use the same bolt spacing, it is no big job to fill the old holes and drill new ones. I know, having just done it. I was fitting larger, more powerful winches. The holes were "countersunk" top and bottom, then filled with polyester marine filler (Plastic Padding as it happens.) The top was underfilled a bit and I squeegied some glass tape on the underside (getting thoroughly messed up in the process.) After any sticking-up bits were removed from the top, I applied a coat of gelcoat filler (from the same maker) so that any bits not covered by the new which would not be too obvious. There were no backing pads, just penny washers, so that is all I used under the new winches.

Ask Lewmar. They knew about my old winches and told me the bad news straightaway. Still haven't found someone to re-chrome the old ones.
