Replacing mooring gear....

Morning all. We are looking to replace some of our swinging mooring gear for the season ahead, namely the pennant, swivel and a few shackles. Last season we used chain from the mooring bouy swivel to the bow roller/cleat on the boat with a pick up bouy on the end of it. I have noticed a lot of craft here in Dale bay are using a nylon? strop type of pennant as opposed to chain, or in some instances, a combination of both (although I suspect one or the other is just a fail safe?). These nylon affairs look very profesional and sturdy/strong enough with spliced in eyes ect so certainly look up to the job, but what...if any....are the advantages or disadvantages over each type? The boat is a 21ft Colvic at about 1 tonne btw.
One more question if I may......which on-line supplier could you recomend for me to buy the gear from?

I had a mooring rope break and the boat broke free and suffered a lot of damage so I would always use chain. Some have suggested a wire strop. If you use rope, protect against chafe and inspect frequently.
 
When we had our mooring on Menai Strait we always had a 1/2" chain pick-up sheathed in a length of fireman's hose to protect the hull. This was OK, not ideal, but was insisted upon by the mooring contractor. One day he lent me his mooring, where I was amazed to find the pick-up to be 1" nylon rope. If I had a mooring now that's what I would use but it does need frequent checking for chafe, easy enough for those who use our boats often but I would stick with chain if I visited infrequently.
 
Thanks for the replies guys.......as I am at least a 2 hour drive from the mooring I think I will stick with the chain, if only for peace of mind. Anyone doing good deals on chain and shackles on the tinterweb at the moment?

I've just had made a couple of Polysteel 36mm x 8m risers with a large reinforced soft eye at one end and a hard eye at the other made by IYE.

They look extremely well made and very strong. I spoke to them on the phone to work out exactly what I wanted, very good advice was given. Delivery took about a week and I thought the price was excellent.
I imagine they would happily splice up strops as well as risers. They also sell a range of other mooring equipment from shackles to anchors/blocks.
Well recommended, no connection etc...
