Replacing engines on a boat

Hello

Can anyone give advice on what sort of job to replace engines. Looking at a boat and it seems if we are to go ahead will likely need to replace the engines.

At present 2 x 115hp Perkins diesels. We would hope to replace with 2 x 120hp or perhaps a little more. Not considering new engines would have to be re-conditioned or perhaps some out of a boat where they are replacing for more speed etc etc.

It's obviously a major consideration before we go any further and just wondered if anyone had any advice or any good websites to find out more.

Boat is a Birchwood 33 GT Shaft drive, PRM gearboxes with 1 1/4" shafts.

At present 2 x115hp Perkins 6354

I've re engined 2 boats. It will take more time and money than you bank on!

Think if your replacing more or less same for same. Should not be that big a job. Especially if outdrives. Only problem with Shafts is getting something that can lift them through patio doors. Maybe needs a bit of inginuity. Sports boat should be no problem. Three or four hours.

Three or four hours !!! YOU GOT THE JOB

Err. 3/4 hours if all parts available. plus crane. Thats about all it took us. But admitted, put same engine back. Theres not that much to undo.

Just had the engine put into mine, 10 minutes from the trailer to sitting on the mounts. Picked out of the trailer by fishing boat with Hiab who came down the river to moor alongside me. Lined up by eye then shaft coupling fitted in an hour, finally to the pub for an extra-cold Guinness.

The rest of the job might take a little longer..........

We were not talking about a like for like replacement here. When you put a different engine in it will take up more time and money than you imagined. It can still be worth it, but think in weeks not hours.

Dont be put off my the crowd that dont know. Everything is easy if you have time, money, the equipment and some luck. Check out what you haven`t got and aquire it for a quick cheap job. Height clearance of the new engine can be problematical. speak with the birchwood owners club if there is one? I took out an engine from a birchwood from the side of the port de plaisance and lifted another one in with a mini hoist mounted on the back of a pick up in two hours. (like for like) if the mountings have to be changed then some fabrication is required, so sit the new engines on folding wedges within 100 thou and strap down. Then manufacture stiff cardboard constructions with the correct holes in the correct places to the same requirement as the finished mounting brackets. Take them to a sheet metal fabricator , wait one week, zinq spray and paint with Hammerite and fit. align up engine and roberto may be your auntie (I`m from Brighton) now the engine wiring may take a couple of hours to sort but not a real problem.

We've looked into getting recon engines but found it a worry as to who did what to them. I would think if you got them from someone with a good reputation it should be safe.
For us we've decided to buy new as alot of the cost will be in fabricating parts and fitting the engines, plus there's a two year warranty, however we are waiting to see what happens with the red diesel issue before comitting ourselves.
Like you we bought the boat at a good price knowing that it will need the engines replacing but have been lucky in that I've been able to keep them going so far, albeit labour intensive!
