I need to replace my cockpit floor. At present, the floor is just two varnished marine ply panels which need to be replaced with something better. The panels sit loosely!! and lift up to get access to engine, drive-shaft etc.

I was thinking to use aluminium checker plate or grp panels (if I can purchase grp panels) cut in shape and fix in place with hinges. Any other ideas? any tips? where do I get grp panels suitable for what I want?

I recall westerly had teak planks round edges with cross members so maybe a copy of a centaur cockpit floor would work and plenty around to inspect ( but i recall other westerlies such as Berwick renown and pentland to name but 3 had same set up if no local centaurs near you)

Re ally chequer plate, it will look rather 'industrial', and it can get slippery when wet, despite the chequers.
If I was going to use ally plate, I would use 'ordinary' marine grade plate, and then paint it, with some non-skid (eg sand) added.

Re fibreglass panels, it is relatively easy to laminate them yourself (perhaps using a sheet of Formica as a mould surface). For stiffness and light weight you could include a 3/4" thick foam core with perhaps a layer of stitchmat on each side, and another layer for good measure on the above side.

Have got to replace mine as well, have seen others use decking... was going to look at hardwood decking... should be quite substantial and hopefully last and have a bit of grip if that's any help to you.
