That's good - I'll write that down.

The funny thing is - when I did the engine overhaul I was self-employed and yet I found the time to do it. I retired last year and now I don't seem to have time for anything! (To which the Old Guvnor might respond "Except waste time on that bloody forum"!)

I've opted for a new Beta 25

Thanks people for all the advice.

After much mithering, I finally decided on a new Beta 25 with a 2.6:1 reduction gearbox to turn my existing prop (3-blade 16x12), Centaflex coupling, new PSS gland, prop-shaft, etc, and I'm going for the optional 70 Amp alternator. The dealer is happy to charge a reduced rate to just align and fit the engine, while I save money by doing the rest of the work myself. He'll then check the whole installation before signing off the 3-yr warranty.

At the end of the day, I didn't want a rebuilt Bukh that might or might not have lasted for "another 30 years". I wanted a new modern engine with a decent warranty that I could easily self-service and which would last at least 10-15 years before needing any futher work.

So you've made your decision! I thinks it 's the way I'd go if the boat is a longish term hold & I could raise the funds and control the costs!

You might get more selling off the bits- I noticed someone is looking for a Bukh 20 cylinder head in the Wanted section.

You're right, I probably could get a little more for selling off the bits but - what with the kid, the wife, the lame dog, the job, the thieving cats, workshop maintenance, house maintenance, boat maintenance, messing about on YBW, let alone trying to get some actual sailing in - I simply don't have the time.

So its out with the old and in with the new! Hurrah!

I suggest you talk to Bukh UK. Everyone who deals with them is full of praise for their helpful advice. They will almost certainly advise your most economic option.

Absolutely. Get on the horn to Al or Norman and talk it through - you couldn't find nicer and more helpful guys. And they really know their machines, and will not sell you anything more than you need to do a good job. Try them!
