I have a Seafarer 701 with 150kHz transducer and want to install a more modern sounder. I bought a Garmin Fishfinder 80 but it has a much different transducer connector. Can I cut the Garmin cable and fit my existing transducer to it? Has anyone tried & succeeded? Many thanks.

generally the modern unit from Lowrance, Eagle, Garmin etc use either a 172 (or maybe 182?) or 200

as the unit will have come with the new transducer anyway, or not a great cost, why wouldn't you simple stick it into an appropriate place inside the hull and be done. Can't be more than 10mins work unless you have a double skinned or cored hull (or wood, steel or concrete I suppose).

transducer ....

Do you have through hull or IN-hull fitting ?
If IN-hull then just wop out old, slap in new .....making sure that castor oil is suffient to fill gap between transducer and hull.

Replacing tube if wrong size is easy ..... suck out oil, knock of the tube and scrape away fixing ..... Oven Cleaner sprayed on to clean it up. Let it bubble and work - then wipe away. Bucket of nice clean fresh water ... rinse of - remiving all trace of Oven Cleaner and dry.
Now chamfer new tube to be vertical against hull. Superglue the tube in place to hold while glassing up .... Once stuck and lined up - start glassing in ... a Davids Isopon kit is good enough ..... build up a good fillet around the tube making sure its sealed all round.
Castor oil can be bought in all chemists in 250ml bottles .... buy 2. One to fill bottom of tube, other as spare.

I would have expected someone to jump in here by now with this, still here I am, hope I'm not too late.

The only depth sounder currently in production still using the old 150 Khz standard is Nasa. All their sounders use 150 khz. and the Seafarer fitting will be the same, so your old transducer will just plug and play. Actually being a 701 it was probably made by Nasa anyway.

So far as I am aware everyone else these days uses 200 khz because it's the standard used in the USA and it's the biggest market for sounders, and most other things, in the world. So if you want to use your Garmin you will have to use the transducer that came in the box.

Think that you may find that Echo Pilot also make a 'Seafarer' compatable display........its only digital and the backlighting is abysmal !

Echo-pilot twin ...

I have this - its 150 transducer and its very good for the money I paid .......

When I first got it - I used the 701 transducer installed in boat .... worked fine till 701 cable gave trouble. So changed to the one in the box - exact same fit / in fact aprt from the dab of paint on the threaded part of the old one - they were same ................

Ok so back-light is not so good - BUT I can see in dark cockpit, it works fine, was cheapest on market for twin - E/S + Speed and I am very happy with it.

That's possibly correct, forgot about them. One tends to think of them in relation to the FLS but they always did have some little logs and sounders.

Is there supposed to be a link there Nigel?

Its a reply to the guy who knocked the Echo-Pilot .... no link supposed to be there .... I thought his comment about the Echo-Pilot to be unfair ..... considering that possibly same gubbins inside as most other twin digi displays etc. - Nasa etc.

BTW - You still importing Russian Night sights etc. ???

Re: Echo-pilot twin ...

I knock it because its rubbish....ours is not twin but solely depth and the display is useless, as I said the back lighting is abysmal, in fact non existant to the point that we rang them in case it was faulty....no thats the way it is made, almost unreadable from a meter away in any conditions....as I said 'junk' leave them well alone.

I must be lucky then !!

So I'm a lucky one then !!!

BTW - I will not be changing it ..... in fact I should fit the speed log bit !!!
