Replacing a 30 years old VDO sounder

I have a steel motor boat that has an expiring VDO sounder - the black fluid [?] has started to creep up the display necessitating a replacement. Two potential problems arise: the first, & most important, is would it be possible to use the installed transducer? If not, is a replacement of the same size [thread od 19.5 mm] available? The second problem is the size of the display, 125 mm sq., and it seems that modern versions are smaller, although this could be fixed by using a blanking plate.

If anyone has any helpful suggestions or experience which would help me, I should be most grateful.
