Recently told thaty boat taps are marine quality and have double chrome plating thickness.

Is ths BS to justify the price?

Has anyone fitted domestic taps and were they far worse in the damp salty marine atmosphere?

I guess you may be right, but then the quality of mass produced taps has one down significantly in my lifetime - must be getting old. I recently re-cut the seat on my kitchen taps only to find that there was insufficient meat to take off a few thou, the washer no longer reached the seat! Had to buy a new mixer tap with ceramic units so that I can refurbish it in future.

The real question is how great is the price differential. If it is inordinate, then would it be cheaper to fit a domestic one and replace it in five or six years to get ten years than to pay for a "marine quality" one and get eight years?

Rob.

The taps in both the heads of my yacht are domestic taps of unknown age but more than 10 years I am sure. The taps are OK but the plastic knobs for turning them on/off are shedding a powdery material. I suspect that the internal metal frame which fits over the tap's spigot is corroding. Anyway, the body is as good as new, so I intend to change the knob bits. Also the shower mixers are domestic and they too are holding up well.

I think you're being fed a load of rubbish by someone trying to get money off you. The plumbing on our boat is bog standard domestic kit and yes, the chrome is beginning to wear on one shower tap unit but at 14 years what do you expect? As to trying to service most of the kit, it's not worth it. Much easier just to replace it when it breaks.

Over the years, I've fitted loads of Bristan taps. Hardly any call backs, but if there is a problem, spares are readily available, unlike Chinese rubbish.

My boat has Bristan Java basin mixers for both galley and head. Kitchen mixers are a bit on the big side for boats.
