Replacement spring/s for broken lock.

The lock on the door to my heads has broken. The handle is still spring loaded but the keep doesn't come out when the handle is released or engage in the keep as the door closes. Having opened it up there is a small broken spring which probably fits as shown. I have added a red line to a photograph of the lock to show how I think it works.

Does anybody know if this right and and have any suggestions where I might obtain a generic replacement. The company that supplied the boat can only supply a complete lock at a cost of £100.

To give an idea of size, the body of the lock is 60mm wide.

You could try making a new one from piano wire,or if too stiff, from the locking wire used to secure shackles, which retains its springiness and doesn't rust. Copy the old one.
I used some to replicate the valve spring on my old Simpson Lawrence loo after 3 or more bought springs had rusted away.

The latch is independently sprung and I 'm not quite sure why. It may have something to do with the fact that it also has a snib lock but I don't quite understand its operation. The helical springs you can see are intact and in place but the latch itself, just flops about.

The L-spring on the left is the broken spring which, presumably, was long enough to reach the latch before it snapped.

I will measure the springs and be back! Thanks to everyone for your help.

You can always get a coil spring of the right diameter and then straighten some of the coil for the shape you want. Be careful if you use side cutters or a shear to cut the spring wire ..... it can break the sound barrier as it pings across the cabin. I suppose I should suggest you use eye protection, leather gloves, and have third party insurance. Instead I'll merely leave you to use a little commonsense!
