A Standard Horizon CP180 that will take the march 2013 NT+ card I have or a Garmin 551 preloaded? Similar in price(ish) although I could sell the card to offset the greater cost of the Garmin I suppose. Thoughts?
we've had the garmin 551 3yrs or so- it connected to vhf (non garmin) no probs - thought might upgrade preloaded charts for uk next yr (if we go off for longer ) and then maybe extend electronic charts coverage if need be-don't want to hijack thread but-- best way to do this ?? best buys etc???These are very different devices from a usage point of view even if they achieve the same thing. Can you get to a shop and try them? Marine Super Store at Port Solent has both live on display so it might be worth the detour on your way to the boat. They also generally have good prices within a few pounds of the best.
It's also worth mentioning that these forums regularly have people with problems connecting Garmin GPS to non Garmin VHF via NMEA, and not every one of those threads turned out to be user error so double check compatibility before purchase.
My advice is to play with both before you decide. I think Garmin have the least intuitive user interface known to man.

OK, I'm gonna go with the SH 180.
Now... I want to flush mount it in the cockpit bulkhead. Should I get the one with an external antenna or will the integrated model work fine in such a pos'n?
