Evening

I'm starting the gather all the bits for the annual service of the engine - VP MD2020D (boat was built in 2001), this is the first time I've serviced this engine, would you go for replacement parts or VP original parts (ie fuel / oil filters and impeller ?

Cheers

Stu

May be wrong so you will know better perhaps: but this engine is actually Perkins IIRC. Furthermore there is no such thing as Volvo original parts as no longer there is Volvo. They buy parts from manufacturers of those.
Just make sure you buy parts from good manufacturers, not the first cheapest. Filters may be any, just the right specs . Impeller is better purchased of reliable, recognized brand. Don't remember, but would bet this is Jabsco pump. Looks this way. It's not made by Volvo.

I still drive real Volvo car, 15 years now :) and I'm great admirer of Volvo. But parts for engine service I get from Volkswagen/Audi and Bosh. It's their engine.

PS correction - Jabsco says some engines had also Johnson pumps. But I'd suspect only those sold in USA.

Other places may have 1/3 cheaper.

Hi Stu, Ive got a 2010 and Im using non-volvo parts. Im sure volvo source their parts from other manufacturers. This series engines were actually manufactured by Perkins anyway. There is a guy on ebay called westerly-sailor selling service kits for these engines. Look in boat parts and maintenance and search for volvo. Some stuff like fan belts you can even get from Halfords. Halfords diesel oil is OK what difference does it make if the viscosity ie 20-50w is right?

Suggest Keyparts. They sell both genuine and replacement parts for Volvo and are cheaper than Volvo. You need so little in the way of parts to do normal servicing it is not worth taking risks to save a few pennies. You normally only need 4 items - 2 filters, drive belt and impeller. The saving buying non genuine on those 4 items is around £20 total. Bigger saving on oil though as you only need very basic supermarket oil which is less than half the price of Volvo branded oil.

Hy Stu
I agree with the other comments of the forum.
As an example
Volvo do not manufacture oil filters. Volvo buys these filters elsewhere according its specifications.
Two important and respected filter producers are Mann and Bosch.
High quality luxus cars use these filters. Why sholdnt you?
The price difference is enormous. A VP oil filter for my 2030 diesel engine costs 60 U$S.
A equivalent high quality Mann filter costs 12 U$S.
You can find similar enormous price differences between VP Impellers and, for example high quality Jabsco impellers.

For filters try inlinefilters.co.uk and use the Volvo part no for the filters in their search engine. Been using their filters for 2 years now (living aboard we use the engine in excess of 200 hours a year) and they've done a great job. You can also get your primary fuel filter from them as well. I use Keyparts for impellers and anodes.

As for belts, I carry a spare set but would only bother replacing one if it was showing significant signs of wear. They are not an annualy replaced item.

My local motor factor looked up equivalents in several makes for the oil and fuel filters on my MD2020D from the VP numbers with no difficulty and supplied them at a fraction of the cost of VP or Keyparts, £3-4 each, haven't got exact figures to hand. Fram oil is PH4967 (replacing PH4386 that you might still find on the shelf) fuel is Fram PH4178.
Drive belt from local bearing supplier (branch of BSL) about £2, known as AVX 10x800 or XPZ800.
No magic answer for impeller though!

CORRECTION fuel is P4178 not PH

The pump in that link is not the one fitted to my MD2020D made in 2002. It's a different shape and the cover plate is not circular it has a lobe at one side.

Looks rather like a Johnson F4B-9.

Rather like this http://www.asap-supplies.com/marine...ng-pumps/johnson-f4b9-pump-10-35271-01-209787 but with a different body - flange fitting and extended ports for hose clips.

Definitely use original parts. When I bought out boat there some oil filters that weren't original parts and they had no pressure relief system. Another vote for Keypart http://www.keypart.com/volvo-penta

The filter type VP3581621 shown on keypart for the MD2020D is actually the wrong one according to the official spares website http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-3581621-oil-filter.aspx

The correct one is VP861473 http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-861473-oil-filter.aspx
