Replacement impeller - any cheaper options available anywhere?

Anyone who read our blog for last weekend will realise that yet again, we have had a busy time without actually managing to go anywhere (well, we made it 50 yards from the pontoon this time, so that's a marginal improvement on not even untying the lines!)

This time an overheat alarm put paid to our plans to leave our berth for the weekend. After checking all the obvious things like water intake inlet / intake pipes / water strainer, it became apparent that I was going to have to be brave and start dismantling the engine for the first time /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif (hubby knows even less than I do about diesel engines).

After prevaricating for a time and re-reading the manual, previous owner's instructions and my RYA guide to Diesel Engine Maintenance several times, I finally took the plunge and removed the alternator belt & water pump belt and got the water pump out (physically impossible to remove the cover plate in situ).

After a little help from a neighbour, we managed to prise the cover plate off (seems previous lubricants had sealed the gasket a bit too thoroughly) and subsequently removed the impeller which only had 3 splines left. More delving in pipe work recovered all the pieces, but now I'm struggling to source replacements.

After trying every chandlery I could think of in the Solent area on Saturday (mainly by phone after the first 3 called no joy) , I had to wait until Monday until I could get to the Yanmar dealer at Bursledon to get a new impeller and gasket for about £27.

The one I removed was a Johnson with the number 827 stamped on it. The Yanmar equivalent is 128296-42070 (or possibly new number 124223-42092 if not in UK).

I have tried all the listings that come up on the first 3 pages of Google searches but cannot find any impellers that match either from a shop or mail order except from the Yanmar spares place. The engine is a 19 year old 3GM30 which isn't all that unusual - any ideas where I might source cheaper replacements from, or am I stuck with returning to Yanmar to fork out another £27 for spares? (U.S. sites won't ship to the UK - I tried!)

By the way, I managed to put everything back together again and restart with engine with a decent water flow and ran it under load for about 30 mins without any problems so that's my first engine demon dealt with. Oil change and oil filter is next.....

The short answer is :-No I don't know of an equivalent.

I had a Yanmar 2GM20 for 7 years , engine new in 1994. I don't remember the impellor being too expensive. I think they are meant to be replaced every 1,000 hours which was minimum every 5 years for me. Even at the price you have paid I think that is reasonable value.

I estimated that the pulley ratio engine to water pump was 3 to 1 which means the impellor turns at 9,000/10,000 rpm as my engined cruised at just over 3,000rpm. I would not compromise at all on the quality of the impellor because is it the single most vital component of your engine that is likely to fail and cause mjor problem/inconvenience.

Congratulations on doing the change. You should always carry a spare impellor. The other pump component that should be inspected during every annual maintenance is the backing plate that the impellor seals against. After a period of use, 1,300 hours in my case on the muddy East Coast, they get scoured and the pump does not run as efficiently (pumps less water particularly at low revs). The plates can be skimmed in a machine shop for the price of a pint and can also be reversed provided the paint is removed.

If your engine is a 3GM30F with a Johnson pump I believe the part you need is X08810B.
The numbers you quote are for the 3HM35F, unless I'm totally misinformed.
The Johnson pump impeller has a screw through the centre whereas the YEU ones don't.
Yanmar have their US parts dealers tied to very specific areas and it's impossible to find one that will break ranks.

I'm sorry, I'll read that again. The notes in my log from 1991 are a little unclear! The X08810B number is for the YEU engine only.
And I'm sure you have the right impeller or it wouldn't have fitted.
Shut up, John!

I bougt a replacement impeller from www.frenchmarine.com
They took the order over the phone sent it to my crew in London the following day and she brought it with her to Spain two days later.
Can't remember the the price but the service was A1

As to cover plate - worth investigating to see if Speedseal do a version to suit your engine. Their replacement makes doing a similar job on my Yanmar much easier.
