Replacement fire extinguisher for engine bay

Just had our extinguishers replaced. Independent fire engineer recommended we replace the old R236 in the engine bay with an FM200 as it is more widely accepted internationally!

Nobody using dry powder?

From Fireblitz.co.uk

"ABC Dry Powder Automatic fire Suppression Units commonly used to protect machinery/plant and where there is a risk of fire such as in boat/vehicle engine compartments."

I had them for many years on my previous boat, surveyor was happy and Insurance policy documents never specified anything.

I thought powder was corrosive to engines and hence many people choose alternatives.

Both my boat surveyor and Insurance stipulated dry powder. Damages the engines but much more efficient at protecting the rest of the boat and those on board. If the engines are still running when they go off and the powder is injested it will stop the engine, possibly permanently so there are merits in some of the alternatives.

I was running a pair of Perkins with open turbo inlets, no filtering, a dry powder extinguisher went off and there was no impact on the engines at all. I fully realise there maybe other engines/install where there might be damage.

Thanks for that, nice to know. Never been in a position where they've fired but I can stop being so paranoid. Double filters on the Tand72p's so hopefully they would survive.?

So did the insurers agree to the use of this type and whether it was necessary to operate it manually as well to meet their insurance conditions?

I used to have an insurance condition that specified either auto or manually fired extinguisher in engine and tankage spaces but recent renewals seem to have omitted it

Hi all,
So, update from surveyor and insurance...

I can use a manual Co2 extinguisher, provided there is a manual way to set it off at the helm (manual pull cable)

So, what i'm after is:
Co2 extinguisher fixed in the engine bay, min 5.4Kg of Co2, mounted to the bulkhead
Manual pull cable with pull-handle at the helm (going to measure length this weekend) - I had this on my previous Sealine.

Can anyone help me with a source? I've been Googling but not getting far.

PS. Don't need any fancy electronic gizmos, a simple manual system as mentioned above will suffice.

-Edit- Basically, this, except Co2: http://www.plastimo.com/en/safety/f...ixes-a-gaz-avec-commande-a-distance-9009.html

I guess a nicer fascia for the pull-cable could look like this: http://www.go2marine.com/product/38...anual-m-pre-engineered-systems-fd-fg-nfd.html

Fire trace should be able to supply what you need, they make up just about any system you want.

www.firetrace.co.uk

Already e-mailed them. They don't do a manual over-ride (ie. manual pull cable) and quoted over £1000 sterling. I think that the system they were proposing was a bit much for what I need.

Many thanks all the same.

Try firemonkey.co.uk they do a range of marine and non marine systems.
The guy who runs it owns a boat, so understands about the specifics.
