The 22 year old steel exhaust water trap attached to my Volvo MD5 has sprung a leak and I was thinking of replacing it with a Vetus plastic one. The old one that i'm taking out has had tape wrapped around the inlet pipe to bring it up to the internal diameter of the Volvo rubber hose (about 2"). I am going to need to do this to the new exhaust trap as well. Does anyone know if it is a special tape or can I use Duck tape?.

Thanks in advance.
Brendan.

try ASAP supplies they do rubber conversion sleeves ,i went from 2inch upto 4 inch for a vetus silencer.

Why?

Would it not be worth changing the hose at the same time and making the whole system 50mm? I imagine that is the exhaust outlet diameter on your Volvo MD5.

Do consider that even a brief time with no cooling water will melt a plastic trap. I know it shouldn't happen but.... I met a chap last year who lost a few days of his hols waiting for a replacement. The first thing he noticed was the boat filling with exhaust fumes. If you must go for plastic I would fit an exhaust temperature alarm.

Just so happens that I've got a Vetus Type LP 50mm in the garage, unused. If you're interested, PM me. No reasonable offers refused! (instructions with it). I've got two Vetus watertraps on the boat (main eng and gen). Had a failed water pump a couple of years ago off Isle de Yeu at midnight (just started the engine for last 1/2 ml into harbour). F6 off shore, I crept in at low revs. Damaged the Vetus rubber hose, but the water trap was fine. They can stand a bit of abuse, special high temp plastic (but I do have a temp alarm).

Thanks for the offer but the replacement I was thinking of is the LP30 (it has to be small to fit the same location). The exhaust from the engine is 50mm thats why I have to use an adapter or tape to get it down to 30mm.

I'm a bit concerned that it might be too small. Does anyone know how to size these things? I know the obvious answer is to ask Vetus but I'm being lazy.
If it is too small I'll just expoxy up the old one for now.

Brendan.
