Sorry, my previous question didn't make it. Any idea for a replacement for asbestos exhaust insulation.
I need some kind of blanket material to wrap around the exhaust pipe before it gets to the muffler. I tried various
heating/furnace supply stores and they all had premanufactured pipes for insulating their pipes, but no wraparound material.
any ideas would be appreciated.

I unwrapped the old "blanket". It appears to be woven asbestos in the form of a length approx 6" wide. The
exhaust pipe had rusted through and the blanket was sooted and burnt in spots. I think it's asbestos as I can't
think of another insulating material. I don't think the material is fiberglass? Would fiberglass work, or does it
burn easily, as in an exhaust application as insulation?

ASAP supplies sell a woven matting tape (not asbestos) which does the job. Comes in various widths and found that the wider stuff was easier to use (less turns). It certainly cuts the heat down from 'burn the skin off' to 'hold on for quite a long time'. The hardest part is fixing the ends and I have found the only secure way is a jubillee clip. I suppose a second layer would improve the insulation properties. One word of warning is that the cut ends shed fibers which make you itch! Any questions send a PM.

High temperature glass webbing will do the trick. My company supplies insulation jacketting to suit many exhaust applications, including marine (sorry Kim), but the jackets may be overkill for what you need. If you have trouble getting anything drop me a pm. Bit late now but if you have to remove the asbestos make sure that it is well soaked with water/surfactant solution, wear a suitable respirator, and seal the lagging in a bag directly. Don't clean up with a domestic vac as it only mashes the fibres up into respirable particles and blows them out again.

Have you tried outlets such as demon Tweaks in Wrexham, rally cars use similar materials, might be worth a look see

Thank you for the information, I'll check google for ASAP, or if you have another website. I'll have to
order the material as I'm out of the UK.

As a temporary solution, or if you're desperate, use Rockwool & jubilee clips. Rockwool melts at a temperature higher than iron, so won't fail before the engine goes into terminal meltdown.

Glass usually melts a little before aluminium - I bet the cylinder head is aluminium, so you'll probably be OK with glass wool based products.

Regards

Richard.

The rock wool should be ok but only use industrial products, not structural insulation, you will most likely suffer resin breakdown which will result in smoke and early failure of the product. Don't use any glass wool products especially those with foil covering. Hight temp glass, or ceramic, rope and webbing will be ideal.

If the old insulation is asbestos, be extremely careful and wear protective clothing including a good quality dust filter. Mesothelioma is not a good way to die. Most council tips have a dedicated asbestos disposal container.
