Well despite having to work this weekend I've made a start on replacing the 100hp Volvo with a 53hp Yanmar. I've removed the gearbox and the engine is ready to be lifted out. The only problem is the propshaft coupling. Couldn't get it off the prop. I've heated it, I've banged it but the puller just isn't man enough and slips off. I didn't have shore power so couldn't even resort to the angle grinder. Hence if anyone has some tips please let me know. Other than that it's time to ebay for heavy duty pullers.

Any decent hire centre rents out pullers - they are very cheap. I use Mark1......

Are you putting in two of these 53hp things, as you had 100 hp before? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The boat origanally had a Volvo MD31A (I think about 60hp.) The boat was stolen in 1994 from the river Dart. The thieves couldn't get below and the engine cooling was turned off. Consequently they cooked the engine and abandoned the boat. The owner at the time replaced it (under insurance) with the turbo charged version of the same engine. It's way to powerful, heavy, noisy and hugry. The replacement is half the weight and size and hopefully a lot quieter. I'm also fitting an Aquadrive and redoing the sound proofing so I hope it all makes a substantial difference.
It looks like hydraulic pullers are the way to go.
