It looks like the rival is going to get a replacement engine as the price of bukh parts is staggering.

Now the choice is a
Vetus M3.28 which is the cheapest
A Beta 25 which is only a little bit more expensive (£200)
The Yanmar 3YM20 which is just under a grand more
Or a replacement bukh which is just under a whopping 2k more than the Vetus

I would rather fit the best engine for the job rather than the cheapest so looking for recommendations.

Rob

If I were replacing my present Beta, I'd get another without hesitation, good engine, good service with, usually, reasonable prices. I don't think the Yanmar is worth the extra, and they can be pricey on spares. I've had a poor experience with a Vetus, but I was probably just unlucky.

I appreciate the attraction of a brand new engine, but any thoughts of a replacement reconditioned Bukh to limit the costs? - agree with someone else's comments in the linked thread -I think they are a fine marine (not marinised) engine.

I have a Bukh 20 in my Moody & did look at possibility of a recon replacement when first bought as state of original was a bit uncertain. It has since proved fine, so didn't proceed, but recall getting a quote from APAS Engineering in Soton for around £2.5 K a couple of years ago

I dont think a reconditioned engine for a £1000 less than new engine is really the way forward. (admittedly it is less than half the price of a new Bukh)

I would always worry what parts they have looked at and thought that will be ok, are sitting in there waiting to cause problems.

With recondition engines they will only replace what they think is worn and at £500 for a set of main shells and £450 for an oil pump they cant be putting that much in it to be able to sell it on for £2500.
A gasket set is £250

As for a second hand engine there is a reason people are taking them out and it's probably not the colour.

I agree. I'd want a very detailed, written description of what exactly is meant by "reconditioned". Reconditioned, like restored, rebuilt and overhauled are very vague terms.

I'd also want a year's guarantee.

If you want the best fit a Bukh - if they weren't very good and very highly regarded they could never get away with charging the prices they do.

OTOH the cheaper engines are perfectly adequate for the task in hand, just possibly go one size up to counter the reduction in low down torque you are likely to experience.

Might be worth looking at the engine footprint/mountings and the Rival bearers/prop shaft angle to help decide. You've had a good pointer from St Bridget - maybe also post on ROA to get Rival owner experience rather than "general engine preference".

It somewhat depends on the size of Rival you are trying to move. Your info request and bio don't give much away. The previous owner of my R32 fitted a Nanni 3.75HE which occupies considerably lest space in the engine bay than its predecessor (which I think was an old Volvo). The Nanni is Kubota based as are some Beta's but I believe the Nanni is based on a slightly more modern Kubota design (others may correct me). There was an article about replacing an engine in an R32 about a year or so ago in YM (may have been PBO) which used a Beta.

Its not my rival thats why my bio wont give any info about it. It belongs to my father in law.

Its a rival 32

All the engines are a similar size about 25hp
Which seems to be what people are recommending.

The vetus is 20mm to wide for the mountings and fitting it would be difficult but not impossible

The beta is narrower and would be easier to fit.

The Bukh depending on how old his last one is could be a straight fit.

Steve i tried to phone you today for a price on a beta 25 but couldnt get through.

Rob

Don't accept the first price that you are quoted. I know that Steve Birch sells Beta engines at competitive prices. (I wish he'd be a bit more honest about that when he always says how wonderful they are).

The reality is that Nanni and Beta are identical base engines in their smaller engine ranges. They marinise them with different components and paint them a different colour, so take your pick.

Phone up E P Barrus (Nanni agents) and tell them the price you can get a Beta or whatever for and they might try and match it.

Check Lombardini and Yanmar foot prints and prices as well. Despite what people say about Volvo spares (and they usually haven't compared the prices properly with Yanmar etc), the new small Volvo engines are a lot smaller than the old ones and are Perkins based.
