Getting to the stage of replacing an old - but still running - Thorneycroft 50HP diesel.

I am looking for something that will be more economical and smaller, but obviously still provide the necessary drive when required.

I have received a suggestion about fitting a modified but new Perkins to the existing gearbox. Any thoughts?

However - since it is now Boat Show time - has anyone heard of any really Good Deals yet?

I'd second the Beta idea, we had our Thorneycroft 37 replaced with a Beta and have not regretted it.

Oh, and we got a good deal at the Southampton Boatshow.

Definitely try Beta - excellent company and one of the few who will make the engine mounts to suit your engine beds so you don't have to rebuild your bearers. I replaced a Thornycroft with the Beta 25HP. When I researched a new engine the cheapest was Vetus(Mitsubishi), but no pump for oil draining, no mods whatsoever, and on my installation difficult to access the sea water pump if you have to change an impellor quickly. Nanni is another good make using the same base engine(Kubota) as Beta. Also try Thornycroft as they do deals on replacement engines with exact mounting point as your original engine. Yoiu should get a good deal athe boat show.
