Hi,

I’m trying to find a supplier of a good (excellent!) replacement cover for a boat I’m in the process of buying - we have Sabre Sails here in the marina and while I love the covers they’ve provided in the past for our current boat I’ve been asking for weeks for a price despite having chased it up and they’ve not come back to me plus a minimum of 12weeks lead time. Any recommendations from the group experts on such matters?

TIA

Familiar story around my area I am afraid..
I wanted some alterations to our cover and the price I got back ... well I was not expecting such an expense. Some of the boat owners have had similar work undertaken so I had an idea of a figure in mind,
I asked 2 other companies to quote and neither even responded.
My work is not urgent so I am happy to wait...
I believe a number of sail making companies are flat out making PPE equipment for Covid-19 so fully understandable.
Good luck...

Hmmm..... mine isn’t urgent - it really is a first world problem - but I would like her looking as sharp as possible for the great unveil. I know these guys are meant to be flat out but if I had a price that I was happy with I would just have to wait but I’d like to be ‘in the queue’ so to speak.

Can recommend Mark Llewellin, but he's in Neyland, about 75mins away. will PM his number, hes done a fair few jobs for me over the years and all excellent. He also does the canopies and upholstery for the Dale Nelsons at the top of the quality league.

I ave just had some covers made for flybridge seat and helm console as the main cover is vulnerable to winter storms. They are based near Totnes, so may be too far away.

It’s a nice place for all of the marine supply industry at the moment, Covid-19 is driving people to spend their money on things that help them deal with whatever situation they have found themselves in. The bubble will burst at some point and let’s see whether these companies have a change of heart about following up on interest...

the yard where our boat is has the same, work booked in for 12 weeks ahead and no let up in sight. We will let our existing covers deal with the winter and get ours done around end of March. I saw this happen with the boat and car industry prior to 2008, they could sell everything and anything they had, my BIL was looking at a boat with the broker on board and he looked at his watch after 10 mins and said, “you going to buy it then”?, my BIL said what about survey, history etc and he said “haven’t got time, if you don’t want to buy it, I have 5 other people waiting to view this afternoon, one of them will buy it, so, is it a yes or no?” Incredible!
different story 9 months later...

Lets hope the same doesn’t happen with this situation!

If you have the time, maybe make your own.
I've gone through a phase of using cheap material.
Now back with the same fabric that came with the boat.
But learned a lot with the cheap material and the covers that I made lasted a year so not a complete waste.
Every job I do, the finished result gets better.
Very important to have a good sewing machine though - I bought a Sailrite
