This crimper is perfectly adequate for amateur use.

Be aware that with some crimps with thinner walls that it is sometimes necessary to drop down a size. In this case you have to be careful not to over press or else some of the crimp material can extrude between the jaws, forming a small sharp tab. This won't normally harm but if the tab is too thick then the crimp wall can effectively split, rendering the crimp loose on the cable.

Once you have put a crimp on then tug it against the cable with your fingers as hard as you can. If it slips off or moves at all it wasn't tight enough. Cut it off and repeat with a fresh crimp.
