And if you didn't have enough to think about already.... I also have a 23 year old dv20 and found that a big plus for traveling further afield is the fact that you can (just, with substantial increase in heart rate!) start it by hand. I cruised for a moonth with no starter motor. I had the same problem of reduced compression which was solved by new piston rings.
