Replace Mainsheet boom shackle

Do you not check the rigging before setting off or every day on passage?
Yes I do, but it tends to be a general cursory process inspection rather than a detailed examination of every possible failure point. For example, I do climb my mast a couple of times a year to inspect the standing rigging, sheaves etc, but not every time I sail. I must admit too, to making assumptions on occasions. They’ve also turned round and bitten me a few times☹️.

I do use a soft shackle on the boom end and the pulley on the mainsheet traveller, no visible sign of wear after three years. The boom end is a long soft shackle (reducing the amount of main sheet) & the mainsheet traveller is short. Also no noise from soft shackles.

As an aside . I would not fit a swivel shackle to the boom. It allows the mainsheet to become twisted. I apreciate that you will use it from port or stbd but the sheeting point is at the bottom & it will not be affected.
Regardless of what others say I have used the same soft shackle at the traveller for quite a few years. because I have 2 pullies there. One for the main 4;1 sheeting & another 4;1 on the tail for fine tuning & ease of handling upwind under load
