Repeater Screen for Cockpit

I've been doing this for ages, repeating the screen of my PC onto my iPad. All you need is a VNC host on your PC, and a VNC client on the remote device.

An example of a host here: http://www.uvnc.com/docs/uvnc-server.html, search your device store for a VNC client, most are free.

or for a few pounds use the app iDisplay which works very well

I think most of you are missing the OP's point - setting up a repeater screen is a piece of cake. Finding one which is waterproof, SUNLIGHT VIEWABLE, and inexspensive, not so much....

Correct!!!!

Though maybe the many ipad owners could comment on the visibility of their ipads in sunlight. I don't have one but I read that its not great.

The way forward surely has to be something like this:

Eink screen. Waterproof. Only problem with this one is it doesn't exist!

There are some other rugged tablets with daylight viewable screens but they are like £2k!!

Then the solution of something like vnc is fine, but I was really pondering the hardware side of things rather than the software solutions which now seem cheap and plentiful.

Must say I thought the same, but the idea was appealing to me so I sat down yesterday evening with a Christian G&T determined to give it a go.
Remarkably straightforward as it turned out. Downloaded a free copy of Real VNC onto the laptop, registered it and it gave an IP address. Downloaded a free copy of VNC client onto the iPad from the iTunes Store, input aforementioned IP address, and that was it, open CPN running on the laptop repeated, and controllable, from the iPad. Less than half an hour in total.

I upgraded the VNC client on the iPad to an ad-free version for the princely sum of 69 pence, it's a bit hit and miss in terms of removing the ads and sometimes needs to be reinstalled, but otherwise, it would seem, a really cost effective solution to repeating charting data in the cockpit.

The laptop I installed real VNC on was an old one primarily used now by the children for doing their homework on. As a bonus, I can now connect remotely from my iPad, to confirm that they really are watching something on BBC iplayer, rather than doing their homework which they swear they're doing....

Very encouraging! I'll give it a go.

I use an xplore tablet, ip67 and sunlight readable. There are monitors available from dumb to full PC, but all are expensive and eat power. All we need is a full colour eink.....

With the current state of technology, I don't think you can have touch sensitive truly sunlight viewable screens. Too many layers. I have just been on a boat with the latest Raymarine touch screens and they were pretty bad in direct sunlight (worse than my old E-series (non-touch), and the wind display picture not as good as a physical moving pointer),

with all the hype of the latest features on iPhone etc, there is still one thing I am longing for: the ability to see the screen clearly outside in daylight......
