Repeatable Passage Plans

Hi all,

How do you do your passage plans?

Do you have a little red note book with common passage plans and scribbles in?

Do you make it up as you go along?

Do you type them up on the PC and get'em laminated to pull out when you use them again?

Do you use the back of a fag packet?

I'd be interested to know 'cos my little red book of scribbles is getting a little worn.

Haver you got the passage plan lurgy then. Take two doses of Soltron. Passage plan is in Harrys head.

Passage plans? what are they? no seriously... ;-)

we have all of our routes saved in a database. We have a database for Irish Sea, Scotland, English Channel so that routes can be traced easily.

All the routes and waypoints are saved using Seatrak chart plotting software. It's really easy to do and you can call up any route in a few seconds and display it on a chart. The route databases can also be backed up to disk to take home and edit or add to at home.

When using paper charts, we used to draw lines with pencils and write the lat and long of WPs on the chart so that it could be inputted into the Decca.

Still the best way! And the safest so you can fall back on the "old fasioned way"

All waypoints and routes stored on user chips (C-Map).
Routes printed out onto charts at home from c-map cartidhes - this is a very neat way of having the colour chart with your route drawn onto it.

Backup on handheld battery powered plotter.

Further backup on paper charts.

I have an A4 ring binder and put the charts in there together with the weather forecasts, tidal curves of all possible ports etc. To save messing about, I print out the tidal cirves for all prinmary and scondry ports that I can possibly visit that weekend. - these go into the passage plan.

The whole process takes about fifteeen minutes before I leave for the weekend.

What I do is use a half A4 notebook (hardish cover) for my log book. I use it as both a jounal and as a log of trips. The page before a trip starts I enter the passage plan in the format of the log, and enter waypoints derived from plotter as destinations.
If it is a cross channel or other trip I have not undertaken before I plot waypoints on paper chart and then double check them on chartplotter.

The page after the actual log I write notes about trip which can be as little as one line.

When I refuel I use a page to write total mileage since last refuel and MPG.

When I next do the trip I can refer to the page in the logbook with the plan and the actual trip and produce a new plan. I know laminated card may save time but I really enjoy looking at the log from our former V40 and the associalted notes especially the French trip which I think ran to around 34 pages.

I think the point about this is don't use a pre printed official type logbook but just an ordinalry notebook. Get down the important information but also use to note stuff which will be of use/interest later.

I use PC Planner NT with the box for 2 chips coming in via USB port. Cost about £120.
With it I can transfer the info from home to boat and vice versa.

My ring binder has all the info with charts that I could need on a trip and it does not tale long to do.

Jot down your way points from start to destination. That's your passage plan. Use it time and time again. Its all a damn set of nonsense anyway.

I think I do it the hard way. Some one nicked the memory card out of plotter and we once used a log. Now nearly never use anything. Lets face it, you can go nearly anywhere within fifty miles from base, off memory, even 100 miles and we've been often enough to know the way. Might just stick a X on the screen some where off a headland so auto pilot has something to aim at. Different in fog of course. But also different in calm and sun, cos then take the scenic route and visit all the little places and coves on the way. Dont thik the weather and tides are ever same enough to want to stick to the same route. Less going to CI or Fance, when theres only one route to go. Must remember to save the fag packet!!

I ususaly enter all the weypoints into my portable GPS, mark a line on the chart and then head to the flybridge, the chart then tries its hardest to fly away and the GPS to bounce its way to the floor, and then ocean etc. good luck all the pc users !

I plan all my routes out at home on the pc. I then print the plan out and the charts with my route on. Take to the boat with pc. Should the pc die, i still have the paper backup.
