WHEN BERTHING THE OTHER DAY i SMACKED INTO MY NEIGHBOURS WOODEN CRAFT SCORING IT HEAVILY ALONG ONE VARNISHED SIDE. HE'S A BIT OF AN OLD F@RT AND GETS STRESSED EASILY SO I WANTED TO AVOID CONFRONTATION AND A POSSIBLE AMBULANCE SCENARIO WHEN HE VIEWS THE DAMAGE DONE TO HIS LOVELY BOAT. SO I THOUGHT I'D WANDER DOWN TO B&Q AND GET SOME TUBES OF ARTIFICIAL WOOD AND POLYURETHANE PAINT AND FIX IT BEFORE HE GETS BACK FROM HIS HOLIDAYS.

WHAT'S THE BEST ARTIFICIAL WOOD TO GET FOR THIS PURPOSE?

Your insurance company!

Nah, the only way to fix this is to leave your credit card with a note of the pin number on the cockpit seat for him. You'd probably be wise to add a couple of decent litre bottles of malt too as a reasonable apology for your incompetence.

I reckon it will cost you at least 3 grand to get that sorted. Skilled woodworkers don't come cheap & then there is the cost of planks of the correct type of wood too. Is it Oak planked? Very hard to get suitable planks these days, but the old ones will make good firewood & the scratches won't matter if you are burning them.

BIG FO Fenders at 50 quid a time are a much cheaper solution for bad helming.

This happened to me years ago,my crmbly little tub had scored the topsides of an adjacent grp yacht and the furious owner wanted to know WHAT I was going to do about itWell I matched the gel coat colour and farted about for several days putting right the damage.I owner turned outto be a good sport and tahnked me for my efforts......

Is this linked to the "GRP Repairers Needed in Chichester Area! " thread?

Not me guv! We have enough Trolls, Gruffalo's, wolves and dragons in our house as it is ...

"and the big brown bear came lolloping over the......"

What is it with bedtime stories trying to scare the **** out of kids so they keep every one up all night with nightmares

If this is real - DON't touch it. You will be liable for the repair of the repair! Which will probably be greater than the original damage. Call your insurance company!

You're lucky that it was only an old wooden boat, no real harm done......it's not as though it was a nice new grp vessel.

IIRC, the Pound Shop does a fine range of wood fillers, they also do a range of varnishes and brushes. Invest £10 and a few hours of your skillful labour and he'll never know.

Do not on any account touch it
An idiot in our yacht club hit another boat causing damage
Tried to do a botch repair (because he was not insured) used ordinary resin instead of epoxy & ended up with a really annoyed boat owner & a big bill
If he had left it then it would have just been repaired & the owner would have just put it down to hard luck
