Repairing scratches. How?

On many new boats the wood work is plywood with an outer veneer. I'm used to this veneer being circa one millimetre and it being covered with one pot varnish which can be removed and so repainted. However, on my new Dufour 40, as with probably all semi-mass-produced boats the veneer is a few tens of microns thick and covered with a thin but very hard epoxy varnish. This varnish resists most knocks but occasionally it is subjected to an impact from some heavy object sufficient to pierce or seriously scratch the varnish.

So my question is how do I repair the scratch / damage?

Are you sure it's veneer? I've just ordered a 425 and got the impression is was laminate.

I got the same question as Berry n Janet I have a 1969 silver line i think the hull is fiberglass but not sure. So how would i fix the scartches

It could be laminate, I'd not thought of that possibility. The thicker wooden items, galley work surface edges etc, must surely be solid though.

For fairly solid wood and decent veneer, I use one of the "scratch cover" products. "Mr Sheen Topps Scratch Cover" is good, as is "Colron Liquid Scratch Remover".

i had a water leak fresh on my bene, it water marked the finish, i stripped it with nitromors cause it was pretty bad and only a small panel. i then mixed mahogany and oak stain to get the right colour and stained it but the best bit was i then used halfords laquer (the stuff they use to spray on metallic colours to finish) it gives a lovely finish and is v hard. you cant tell the difference from the bene finish. if you just have a l slight chip, a bit of fine wet and dry, stain as above, then carefully finish with the laquer, polish with v fine wet and dry and then cutting polish.
