Small gouge out of one side right at the bottom of the keel - 3ft long, max. half inch deep and half inch wide - not structural. What is the best / easiest way to fill it prior to painting? Is Plastic Padding marine filler or some similar 2-part epoxy the way to go?

(Needs to be ready to paint PDQ as we need to get in the water . . . )

G'day Nick,

What material is the keel made of in the damaged area?

Clean the area and add some epoxy resin mixed with "closed cell" balloons / spheres, this will need 4 coats(wet on tacky) after sanding to ensure no water gets past it.

The quickest way to repair it properly is to use This

Easy to use and it will solve your problem. You may need to use some primer. But it will do your job easily.

You could use epoxy with some fillers but, if you don't have any this would be the quickest way.

Cheers

Iain

save yourself some sanding down by carefully covering the epoxy with strip of clear plastic, like the sheets used on any overhead projector or packaging. Smooth over watching to make sure there are no air bubbles trapped, gives a nice gloss finnish if you get it right.

Brown parcel tape is excellent for this job.
