The pump head on my Whale universal 12v galley pump seems to have gone kaput. I have two options - replace the whole pump or replace the head. I have no idea of the pump age - it may be a couple of decades or more. Would you replace at twice the cost of repair? My feeling is replace, but you may know whether these pump motors are everlasting.

whale I'll be ........

I have just had a similar quandary. The pump pumped fine but the non-return valves were not holding so the pump cut in every half minute to restore the pressure. It was not until I opened the service kit (Seamark Nunn £36) that I found I could have dismantled the pump end by undoing the screw in the centre of the driven socket. This disclosed that the inside of the pump was furred up like a kettle using hard water. I debated whether to try and de-scale or fit the new pump end, In the end I fitted the new pump end. The motor was only seven years old and no reason to replace it. I would have thought any pump motor used intermittently should last indefinitely.

Unless you currently have easy access and no need to use the system, I'd go with the idea of fit a new one and repair the old one at leisure (finances permitting). If you have the boat ashore or unused in a marina, you can pull it out and see if you can fix it now.

Many thanks for the advice - you've just saved me the cost of parts or a new pump. I thought it was not possible to service this myself, but have just taken it apart and - sure enough - just some grit needed to be cleaned out. Pumping away fine now. My version is pre-external-filter. Are there filters suitable for putting in the line before the pump to catch grit and stuff?

something like this would do. Depending on what connections are on your pump, you may be able to get a version that will screw on directly.
