Hello all,

Someone offered to help us with a restoration/repaint of a boat and decided to up and leave half way... leaving us with a lot of unfinished work!

Here's what we did so far:

- took out all the seacocks
- sanded the hull right down to the fibregalss
- sanded the keel right down to the metal and coated it with epoxy
- sanded the freeboard down to the coat

Immediate "problems":

- The freeboard/gelcoat has not been sanded perfectly. will filling it with epoxy resin, smoothening and sanding the imperfections help? and suggestions / methods?
- We've got the paint, but are not sure if it enough, where it goes and if we're missing a gelcoat. Paint:
-- 3 International - Primer - Interprotect - Lt 2,5 - White
-- 2 International - Enamel - Interdeck - Lt 0,75 - White
-- 1 Veneziani - Primer - Propeller Primer - Lt 0,25 - Gray
-- 1 Veneziani - Antifouling - Propeller - Lt 0,25 - White
-- 1 International - Danboline - Lt 0,75 - White
-- 1 Stoppani - One-pack enamel - Clipper - Lt.0,75 - White
-- 2 VC offshore EU 2lt
-- 4 International Tar2 Primer (for VC)

Are we missing the waterline strip paint? in which order should we apply all this?

Long term questions:
It seems that very few people use VC offshore antifouling EU in Malta (supplier did not even have it in stock and asked why we chose this...the guy helping us swore by it), for some reason people use Micron all the time. Is it easy to change to Micron after a while (paint on the tar2)?

I've got so many more questions...but I guess that's all for now. I think we'll manage with applying the paints, but want to be certain we get the right order now that we've spent nearly one month sanding

Also, we've found silicone between the hull and keel. The keel is inserted into the hull, the guy removed the silicon and inserted epoxy resin into the gap.. isn't it suppose to be flexible?

Hi neilf39

Thanks for the reply, we've sanded all the keel but left the gelcoat on the freeboard (should we sand the freeboard too?). The pictures where not taken today.

Any help is greatly appreciated
thanks

Hello all,

Hi Ian

Someone did a great job of selling you a load of paint thats for sure!,it is also hard to judge as I do not know your hull area m/2.

First remember, you can put a one pack onto a 2 pack, but you can not put a 2 pack onto a one pack.

I also do not see on your list any thinners, you need to clean the hull before appyling any 2 pack paints especially epoxy assuming you are back to the gelcoat and there is no antifoul left on.

The VC Tar 2 primer I asume is for the hull bottom, this is a two pack.http://www.boatpaint.co.uk/datasheets/International/Product Data Sheets/VC Tar2_GB.pdf, however you usually apply 4/5 coats so you have not got enough!

Why you have also bought 'another two pack primer' I do not know?? the Interprotect Epoxy is a tie coat for antifoul you could have used just International Primacon primer: http://www.boatpaint.co.uk/datashee...ata Sheets/Interprotect (Professional)_GB.pdf

Why you bought VC Offshore antifoul I do not know, however this can be applied over the Interprotect WHEN IT'S DRY !!, next time if you want to use Micron Extra suggest you first apply one coat of International Primacon primer after you have lightly sanded the old antifoul.

The upper hull must be completly free of any old paint, I assume from your post it is now back to gelcoat, I am not sure what your intentions are for repainting it from your list.

The Interdeck is a none slip paint for decks which I assume is what you are going to use it for?.

Why you have Danboline again I do not know, guess you want to paint some bilges etc, far cheaper to have used International Garage floor paint as it is also oil and water proof and much cheaper from B & Q.

Do not mix the 2 pack epoxies all at once, mix well and only enough you can use in say twenty minutes AND mix the correct ratio.

For a boot topping (I assume you mean 'above the waterline') try International Toplac, at least 3 coats.

Could go on forever hope above is of some help.

Thanks for the reply Mike

"I also do not see on your list any thinners, you need to clean the hull before appyling any 2 pack paints especially epoxy assuming you are back to the gelcoat and there is no antifoul left on." - Apologies, I forgot to mention that I bought around 6 liters of acidtone to clean the hull

"Why you have also bought 'another two pack primer' I do not know??" - Forgot to mention that I am also painting the deck with interprotect

"The upper hull must be completly free of any old paint, I assume from your post it is now back to gelcoat, I am not sure what your intentions are for repainting it from your list." - The hull is free from gelcoat too - do I need a Gelcoat? Reason for painting - we saw what looked like the beginning of osmoses

Thanks a lot for the help, very useful post! Will follow your bildge suggestion.

Thanks
Ian

It appears from the photo that a great deal of the gelcoat has been abraded away?Anyway when filling and fairing the topsides use polyester filler. It's much easier to work with and sand and also quicker to set.Much cheaper too.You don't need the extra water resistance of epoxy on the topsides.Always use filler ,not straight resin.Epoxy filler is the only thing to be used in the underwater areas. The keel joint may flex a bit so the epoxy that's been applied will certainly crack with time.

Thanks for the reply 30Boat, would you suggest removing the epoxy and filling with silicone again? I will use polyester filler; sounds perfect.

We've got epoxy based International Interprotect - 1.85 gallons for the deck and topsides, the color is the same - do you have any suggestions on how to keep track of which areas/layers we've painted?

Will keep polyester on the topsides only. got it, this is great because I am very tired of sanding!

Does anyone have any experience with International Tar2? May I apply Micron on it? will I need a gelcoat before applying it?

thanks

I'd leave the epoxy around the keel until the next haul out.If it's cracked then it can be ground off and replaced with Sikaflex.Don't use silicone sealant,it doesn't adhere well. And yes keep the polyester filler above the waterline.
