Hi All,
My starter rope on the Mariner 2.5hp 2 stroke failed yesterday leaving me with the handle and 6 inches of rope in my hand and the rest retracted into the recoil.
I know how to replace/repair rope on recoil starters in general, having done so on a generator recently and my B&S lawn mower. These were easy to line up the recoil and outer frames (after rotating the recoil until under tension and jamming the two with a screwdriver) so that the new rope could pass through and be knotted. However the recoil on the 2.5hp doesn't look to have the same access unless I'm missing something obvious.
I also have the diagram by components from a Mariner dealer website, so have an exploded view of all the parts.
Has anyone got some advice as to the best way of doing the replacement with a new rope? I have the recoil unit off the outboard ready for disassembly, and can see there is a circlip (E piece) on the bottom that I would need to remove to access the inner parts, but I'm wanting to make sure that in taking this off I don't do anything daft like letting the recoil spring unravel.
Thanks for your help
