Hi
I have two BMC commodore 3.4 litre with MR/MRF 250 gearbox. 1974 rebuilt in 1991. I took in a little water at a recent grounding and water entered the gearbox and engine sump via the dipstick. The engine sump is showing a high level of fluid but has not emulsified to white gunge. The gearbox however has turned to a thick white paste. The mechanics here say that they suck what they can out then run the engine and gearbox with flushing oil mixed with diesel. Then repeat if required.
My question is this the way to do the job as nobody here in Corfu wants to do it. They are not interested in doing the work and I included a full service of the engines. So it looks as though I will have to do the work myself. I have never had this experience with marine engines and gearboxes before.
Can anyone advise please?
I have also asked on the livaboard forum if anyone can recommend a firm or mechanics to do the job.
