is there a tool made to fit up a skin fitting to hold the two lugs inside ,or what do you do,i tried a piece of stainless flat bar but it twisted thanks ,Kieron /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I welded a short piece of 2 inch angle to a length of 2 inch pipe many years ago for this job. It has been used many times and works very well.

Try a short length of heavier flat bar, held as closely as possible to the fitting with a pair of Stillsons or a big adjustable spanner.

I remember reading about a tool which does just the job you want but can't find any mention of it on the web. It was designed in such a way that you could use it on many different sizes too, by having sort of steps.

I myself would just use a small heavy bar.

I just use a wood chisel.

I have quite a range of them and have always been able to find one which fits.

If a bit of persuasion is required I hold the blade from turning with an adjustable spanner.

Cheers

I searched for one of these before my last haulout where I needed to replace a skin fitting.
I was working solo so it added a extra difficulty.

I ended up backing off the backing nut unntil the skin fitting protruded a bit from the hull and lopping it off with a hack saw. It was so easy I did my engine intake seacock and skin fitting as well.
I kept the old fitting with seacock attached and to this day I cannot get it unscrewed using a vice and metal bar.

Might be worthwhile having a backup plan.

Quick way to remove old fittings without stress.
Get a hole cutter just larger than the size of the external hole visible on the outside of the hull.
Hammer a wooden taper plug (the type used to plug though hulls in an emergency).. saw off flush with outside of fitting..
using hole cutter.. simply drill into the flange until it pops off .. you can mark the dpth on the cutter with a bit of insulating tape.... if it doesnt pop off then use a small chisel to lever it from the bond..
Now, tap back the whole of the rest of the fitting into the boat.. job done.. no worries..

Buggering about with massive grips and special tools from both sides is a pain..

Hope that help..
