Removing Silkaflex

Hi all, I have been taking off some fittings from "Sea Serenade". In places they seem to have been coated with thick layers up to about 1/8" of Silkaflex or at least some black rubbery sealant to hold it on or seal leaks. The person who did it must have bought shares in the makers.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to remove it. It sticks like the proverbial to a blanket. Main problem is that the fittings have been chrome plated and I think that if I scrape it of then I may damage the chrome plating as well. On one piece I did spend 15 minutes trying to peel it off by hand but it damaged the surface coat.
Is there any type of fluid or other product that I can soak it in and then lightly scrape it off ??

Acetone, may shift it, but would be terribly messy!

The Sika company sell some goo to get the stuff off your hands, I think. How about trying that? Of course, it may only work on the uncured stuff. A friend of mine went in for a Quick-and-Dirty Boatbuilding competition and got Sikaflex all over his hands. IIRC it took about a month for it to wear off his skin. I'm only telling you this to cheer you up!
