Removing sediment from bottom of fuel tank

At last after hours of painstaking work with hacksaw blades, as there was no room for a power tool, my son has managed to remove the tank.

Many many thanks to everybody for their considered ideas and thoughts. Now to get it cleaned and think about where to fit an access hatch and how to refix.

I wouldn't use my wet vac for very oily or diesel-mixed water, simply because the wet vac will stink of it for months to come.

I think a certain amount of water and crud is always going to be present in any fuel tank that is in use. It is worthwhile going to a certain amount of effort keeping the quantity comfortably below what the filter system etc can cope with.
Beyond that you quickly get into diminishing returns trying to make the system immaculate.

Friend of mine does it for a living amongst other things.

He has a nice powerful pump & a big filter. He needs reasonable access as the pipes are bigger than the average filler pipe. Inspection hatch is fine. The feed to the pump goes in one corner of the tank. The outlet from the filter goes to the opposite one. Switch the beast on & it creates a swirl in the tank. Leave for an hour & it's pumped the whole lot through the filter many times & anything that can move is in the filter.
