Removing residue left by old non slip tape

Hi.

Removing old and weathered non slip grip tape from gelcoat. The actual tape comes of easily with application of heat but leaves a lot of residue behind.

The residue at first appears solid as in I can start to scrape it off with fingernail but then it start to leave stickiness behind.

I have tried removing the residue with acetone, WD40, Eucalyptus oil, MEK, carb cleaner, brake cleaner, and just about any other chemical I can find. The acetone softens the residue but then it balls up and streaks when I rub it off rather than actually comes off.

Any other chemical worth trying?

Try this first and then remove residue with Unifit 'Sticky Stuff Remover'. There are other purpose made glue removers on the market.

IMO for the hastle and mess/damage that can be caused by scraping and experimenting with anything to hand it is surely worth 'investing' in a can of this stuff. It goes a long way and can be bought in gel or liquid form. Handy round the house?
It states: Extremely flammable. Contains amongst other ingredients: ALIPHATIC HYDROCARBONS>30% if you have any of that laying around?

I have used this, it works well on glue residues such as old dried out Evostik, so probably good for tape glue also.

I have the same suspicion. Don't forget it evaporates really fast, so after about a minute you're just rubbing with a plain cloth if you don't keep topping it up from the bottle.

Cover the acetone with polythene sheet to cut down evaporation

I've found Hammerite thinners will shift some adhesive residue which acetone or celulose thinners won't touch.

Thanks for all the suggestions, being in Western Australia a lot of the proprietary products are not available but will look out for them and try with lighter fluid and the other suggestions.

That 'Sticky Stuff Remover' is complete rubbish. Might be ok on kids stickers but no good on industrial adhesives. The Evo-stik remover is ok or acetone/petrol mix.
