I want to remove a name painted on a polished GRP hull. The paint seems to be a normal oil based. Does anyone have experience and what is the recommended method?

Sandvik make very good carbide scrapers that, used with care, will lift the paint without harming the gelcoat.I scraped off a stripe around my boat,19 meters in all, with one of those and didn't make a single scratch.
The secret with these scrapers is the curved blades that don't dig in easily.

If you do leave some fine scratches with the scraper, rub them down until they've disappeared with 1000 grade wet-or-dry paper and then with 1200grade. After that, buff the topsides with buffing compound and a mechanical polisher (see other threads on this).

I used T cut and finished off with a wipe down with Acetone, it was much easier than I anticipated and took no more than 30 minutes to remove the name & port of registry.

Thanks to everyone! I was subsequently recommended to a special paint remover called 'Dilunett': expensive at £11 but used it and it did the job in an hour, leaving the gel coat as new. I washed off with a pressure washer and there isn't even a trace of the name. Brilliant!
