Removing old sealant

I've removed some deck fittings to repair water-damaged areas of deck underneath them.

I've fixed the deck and now want to replace the fittings, but it's next to impossible to remove all traces of the old (silicone-based) sealant.

I'd be very grateful if anyone has any tips to help.

Rub and trim away as much as possible and then go to B and Q and buy some silicone sealant remover, apply as per the package and then clean up.

meths will disolve with a bit of elbow grease

Borrow the kids pencil rubber, make sure the job is dry.
