Removing letters from vinyl wrap

Not being the superstitious type, I am considering renaming my new to me boat, the stern has letters on white gel coat which should be an easy DIY job, the sides of the hull have a slick light grey vinyl wrap with white letters stuck on top, these are slightly raised so I’m nearly certain they were stuck on top of the vinyl wrap. Obviously heat could cause issues with the vinyl wrap so looking for some advice for removal without damaging the wrap.

Also the boat was registered on SSr from new but as far as I know this expired, the number is also stuck on the stern and is starting to peel so I would consider either removing completely or redoing in the same font and colour as my new name, can someone explain the merits or requirements for ssr registration for a 34 ft pleasure yacht?

Don't forget to have a proper naming ceremony, with champagne (or cheap prosecco). I renamed a boat and she sank to the bottom of Poole Harbour 3 years later! Good luck.

There's no time limit on bad luck. I've renamed my last three boats, and while I've had no major issues with any of them, I still haven't one a Euromillions jackpot.

Registration is not compulsory IF only staying in UK waters. Some form of registration is mandatory if go overseas - such as France (and perhaps even technically Chanel Isles etc)
However, as only a few quid for 5 years I would reregister with the SSR - should be able to keep the same number.

I think the font for SSR is specified, maybe colour too.

As no one is answering the first part of your question, I will. Very possibly unlikely you'll get the letters off without causing some damage to the vynil wrap. You could try some white spirit just applying it sparingly with a brush to the edge of the letters and see if the adhesive lets go. If it does then keep going slowly slowly peeling a bit at a time. Hopefully you'll get there but very slow progress. If the white spirit or sticky stuff remover doesnt shift them then anything more agressive will possibly probably damage the wrap material.

In addition, I’d carefully mask the surrounding area so that if there is a run of solvent, or any other collateral damage, you could replace a small, regularly shaped section of the wrap and then apply the new name over the top.

I don't think it is specified anymore, as there is no longer a requirement to display the SSR number.

Morning all - finally got around to this and pleased to report that the lettering came off without any damage to the vinyl wrap. I heated the letters slightly with a heat gun then picked the corner with a window scraper and the rest peeled off easily by hand.

On the gel coat at the transom I also used the heat gun but found the window scraper invaluable as the lettering had become brittle. Just need to deal with some shadowing the gel coat from the letters, hopefully with a good polish then time to fit the new name.
