I'd like ot remove the stbd engine Turbo to give the paintwork leading to the exhaust riser a clean up as there's surface rust where it joins. The boat's in the water. Can I simply unclip everything, give it a wiggle and pop it off or are there things I need to drain down first. I presume there's no risk of water ingress in to the boat removing this item. Is there anything I should check whilst it's off?

I'll do some reading too but thought I'd ask the forum for advice too.

many thanks Gary

The exhaust turbine housing is usually freshwater cooled, and you'll have oil feed and drain lines. Don't get antifreeze in your oil!!

No danger of sinking though, no raw water in it.

I would be tempted to leave it in place, and just give the rusty bit a rub down, followed by a spray from "El Greeno Canno".

Can you mask the area instead of removing the turbo?

Turbos link to the exhaust, the inlet, the cooling system and have pressurised oil lubrication.. Potential for lots of mess..

you will need to drain out @ 1/2 of the antifreeze mix from the cooling system. The oil is not under pressure when stopped and just runs back to the sump. However if access is very good it will take you 1 1/2 hours at least to get it off and probably a bit longer to get it back on again. If access is tight you might wish you never started. Plus new gaskets and rubber seals for all the connections. Unless the rust is terrible I would just get a small wire brush (toothbrush size) and splash on some hammerite or volvo green

I agree there is no raw water in it however when you remove the turbo you do leave a rather large exhaust down pipe which is open to the raw water, any one getting on the boat or passing wash could push water over the lip of the downpipe, I would not want to leave my boat in this condition especially as the pipe diameter must be around 6"
I agree with everyone else, leave it on, wire brush and repaint. Save the money you would spent on the gaskets!

IMO if it ain't broke don't take it of - just asking to create a problem where none exists.
So another vote for wire brush and re-paint.

thanks guys, I reckon you've just saved me a number of hours work there along with avoidance of the obligatory skinned knuckles when working on green painted steel :) Was just concerned after (incorrectly) relating this to my experience on the Mercruisers... surface rust around the coupling of the exhaust manifold and the riser usually = gasket and/or water jacket problems that warrants further investigation.. I've clearly put two and two together and come up with five as it'd appear not to be a similar concern where the turbo and exhaust risers are concerned.. much to learn with these Volvo lumps

thanks again
