What product can I use to safely remove some old glue residue off a gel coat GRP hull?
Does WD40 work? I have tried some window washing liquid and scraping it off but it is pretty persisten and would not want to damage the coating. The ambient temp outside is around 25Celcius.

Not sure what left the mark. It looks like some sort of a sticker was on there before right on the gelcoat. It's a thick, whiteish/yellow residue which is similar to something you'd find on a tableware that had really nasty bar code tags stuck on.

if it has been left by a self adhesive sticker "Sticky Stuff Remover " from you local hardware store.
No home should be without a bottle of it.

Wet & Dry!

One of our club members has a very nice yacht which was built to a very high standard for some European royal household.
The point I am making here is that it is too nice to scuff or neglect and is still in good condition.
Well….as it happens his neighbor (on a wall mooring) brushed-up alongside with considerable force creating a certain amount of pressure and heat. This leaving some well bonded gelcoat transfer from his neighbor to his own yacht. Numerous cleaning and rubbing compounds were used but with no obvious improvement, so as I was in the area he asked if I would take a look.
My first approach was to use acetone, but this had no effect, even with a scourer.
So I advised using various grades of wet & dry, with some slightly soapy water dispensed from a pressurised spray and a cork sanding block, followed by cutting compound and a final polish.
As he didn’t know what to do I completed a 4” square to show him all the stages, then gave him all the gear to get on with the job (not difficult but time-consuming & hard work).
This resulted in a professional finish which he was & still is “over the moon” with.

P.S. He now has lots of fenders! :D

Thank you for all the suggestions. Before trying to locate the products mentioned in this thread I tried simple household alcohol 95%. It removed the residue like magic. Gel coat seems good after.
