Hello Gang,

Our Volvo TMD 22 powered yacht has a unsightly stripe of diesel soot along its port side. I tried various products but thus far have failed at removing the stain.

(Do not suggest a new engine... the reliability of ours is proven and we will not replace it with a "green" electronically controlled engine. Overhaul will be done when needed.)

What do you use?

TA as always.

The area around my exhaust tends to go grey and sooty. I try to wipe it regularly, but it needs cleaning occasionally. I normally use a gelcoat cleaner, and treat what remains with Starbright Colour Restorer polish. This usually does the job.

Thank you lads... the Autoglym suggestion should have been mine; I had collector cars in the past and showed them in Concours shows.. my bad

:-)

I find it very good for grey streaking on the topsides in general, having worked through to the rationale that they came from hydrocarbon deposits not from the aluminium of the toerail per se and following the advice of a caravan owner - see http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthrea...aust-fumes-from-hull/page2&highlight=autoglym

Astonish oven cleaner. It is a paste obtainable from many supermarkets in different names but Astonish seems the best
Cleans many other stains on gel coat around the boat & is ultra cheap.
Just put some on a slightly damp cloth or a sponge & rub on stained area. Then wash off with soap & water. removes the black soot instantly
I also use Ajax if I have lots of difficult stains or on the deck where the non slip makes cloth use difficult. Then I scrub in with a scrubbing brush

I seem to get quite a lot of soot around the transom but polish removes it easily.
I do have a suspicion that it happens less with car diesel than with red. Maybe the car stuff has some injector lubricant in it? or maybe fewer impurities? anyone else found this?
(Yes, the injector has been serviced recently. 1GM.)

While checking up on this thread, I found 2 VG ideas. WD40 then wash... and Silky.

However, FWIW, we add 1 liter of 2 stroke oil to every 500 liter or more fill up. (We have a 600 liter tank) The point being to add some more lubricity to the otherwise very dry diesel fuel available these days. I'll put up with a bit of soot...

Thank you all
