I'm all kitted out now for a quick lift out and clean. I have some oxalic acid for removing the yellow waterline stains but I also have some black stains where the boat has come into contact with the black rubber on the edge of the pontoon. Will oxalic acid remove these also or do i need to buy yet another product?

Oxalic acid will not remove the black rubber markings.

For that you will need something abrasive, try Jif in the first instance used lightly on a damp cloth. Probably find some under the kitchen sink.

I'm a big fan of these melanine fibre sponges that just use cold water. They get scuff marks off fibreglass a treat and are excellent on garden furniture and UPVC. Completely non toxic. Brand names are Magic Eraser (JML) sold by Robert Dyas, Woolies sometimes and Eradicator sold by chandlers and there are own brand versions in most supermarkets. Comes in a big block for £5 or less and you just slice off a bit and wet it.

A gentle wipe with acetone on a paper towel will do the job admirably. Easy. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks, my wife is shortly going to be very short of nail varnish remover /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If i was to need it in larger quantities have you any ideas of the best place to buy?

ah but i can try mine, and I pass it on the way home from work. Probably not the cheapest place though by a long shot. I was wondering about DIY stores or High Street Chemists.

Most high street chemists will have acetone but probably only in 50ml bottles.

It may not be rubber though, have you tried anything to remove it yet? On many pontoons what looks like black rubber is actually a plastic. After putting a foot-long stripe down my hull I was pleasantly surprised to find that I could lift a corner with a fingernail and it all peeled off in a single piece without leaving a mark.

it doesn't really have any thickness, it's just like a dark grey area on the fibreglass.

I haven't tried anything to remove it yet, shes still in the water at the moment and only coming out for a short period. Which is why I'm trying to prepare fully, unusually for me!! If i took her out for the winter I'd still do everything in the final 2 weeks /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If short on time, I'd not mess about. I'd go with a gentle rub with 1200 gauge wet and dry - then a bit of liquid rubbing compound (or possibly a Jif type product) - and then polish.
Or ....
Do the rubbing compound first and if that doesn't shift it go to the Wet & Dry.

have fun

I usually find that what doesn't come off with hull-cleaner comes out when I rub polish on, such as Starbright Teflon. Most of the grime around the exhaust comes out too.

I have successfully used Starbrite Black Streak Remover to remove black stains on the hull that other cleaners have failed to touch. How it knows what is in my black streaks I don't know but it works! Maybe it will work on rubber/plastic type stains.

I get 1 litre bottles of acetone from my local motor paint factors. Don't know if all paint suppliers sell it but it's worth a try. Look in your local Yellow Pages.

You will find not many if any nail polish removers now contain Acetone, it's now listed as an undesirable chemical and possible carcinogenic.

However it's still available in bulk and a lot cheaper the nail polish remover. Try your local fibreglass shop, factory, or chandler.

I have removed tyre marks and exhaust stains with a degreaser in the past.
